“I've spent 11 years helping moms. And there's one question I hear again and again: Why hasn't my belly gone back to the way it was?”

Every week, a different mom comes into my office with a remarkably similar story.

Some gave birth just months ago. For others, it's been years — sometimes more than a decade. She's completed postpartum physiotherapy. She’s started exercising again. She eats better than she did before pregnancy.

And she always asks me the same question:

“Why won’t my stomach go back to the way it was?”

What strikes me most is how guilty so many of these women feel. Like they’re not doing enough. Like somehow, it’s their fault.

It isn’t their fault. And after 11 years, I want to explain once and for all what far too many women are never told.

THEY ALL SAY THE SAME THING

"I lost all the weight I gained during pregnancy. The scale says 58 kg, but my belly tells a different story. It's soft, it sags, and it still sticks out — even on an empty stomach and under my clothes."

"In the morning, it's manageable. By evening, I look four months pregnant. My husband says I'm exaggerating. But it's my body — I know it."

"I stopped looking at myself in store mirrors. I cancelled our trip to the pool with the kids this summer. I'm 36, and I feel like I'm hiding."

Moms who are doing everything right. Who keep trying. Who eat healthier, stay active, and never give up.

Yet they still feel guilty when they don't see any results.

Why Nothing You've Tried Has Worked

What I'm about to explain is something most women don't discover until much later. Sometimes months. Sometimes years after giving birth.

Ab exercises strengthen the muscles — but they don’t close the abdominal wall.

Over the course of nine months, your abdominal organs were pushed out of their usual position. Your uterus grew until it filled much of the abdominal cavity, pushing the intestines upward and the colon to the sides. Everything had to make room.

Your abdominal wall stretched. The muscles in your abdomen became wider and longer.

After giving birth, the uterus shrinks back down fairly quickly. But your organs don’t automatically return to their original position. And the abdominal wall doesn’t simply close back up on its own.

That belly you can’t seem to get rid of often isn’t just excess fat. It’s a structure that has remained open.

HERE'S WHY EVERY SOLUTION SEEMS TO FAIL

  • Exercise — Ab exercises strengthen the muscles, but they don't pull the abdominal wall back inward. Crunches can even make diastasis worse. Most women don't know this.

  • Dieting — You can't burn away a structural issue with a calorie deficit. Your belly isn't necessarily excess fat — it can be a muscular gap that hasn't fully closed.

  • Pelvic floor therapy — Essential. But it focuses on the pelvic floor, not on closing the abdominal wall. It's like repairing the floor of a house without fixing the walls.

  • Traditional shapewear — It compresses from the front. Your belly can still push out at the sides and back. And as soon as you take it off, everything falls back into place. Some garments can even make things worse by shifting the pressure elsewhere.

  • Surgery — A tummy tuck can cost between $6,000 and $12,000. A scar from hip to hip. 8 to 10 days off. Up to 3 months of recovery without being able to lift your child normally. And if you gain even a few pounds afterward, the skin can stretch again. For many moms, it simply isn't realistic or affordable.

"I met with a surgeon. $9,200. I drove home in complete silence. That night, I cried in the bathroom. Not because I wanted surgery. Because I thought it was my only option."

The sentence that changed everything in my practice

Three years ago, a physiotherapist colleague said something to me that I’ve never forgotten:

“Shapewear compresses the front.
But your body goes all the way around.”

That’s the whole difference.

Think about it for a second.

Your abdomen isn’t a flat wall. It’s a cylinder. It has a front, sides, and a back.

Pregnancy can stretch and separate the abdominal muscles, sometimes leaving a visible bulge after childbirth.

Compressing only the front is like trying to close a tube by pressing on just one side. It simply won’t work properly.

What’s needed is circular compression. 360 degrees. Across the front, around the sides, and through the back. Continuous and even.

Postpartum abdominal wrapping has a long history in several cultures

The Bengkung: a long strip of fabric wrapped in a spiral around the abdomen after childbirth.

In many cultures, women have known this for centuries.

In Malaysia, Morocco, Indonesia, and Mexico, women traditionally wrapped their abdomen after giving birth. Not for cosmetic reasons. For mechanical support.

In Malaysia, this technique is called Bengkung. It involves wrapping a long strip of fabric several times around the abdomen and wearing it during the weeks after childbirth.

Gentle, all-around support across the front, sides, and back.

Studies on postpartum abdominal compression have shown a significant reduction in waist circumference and improved organ repositioning compared with women who wear no abdominal support.

The problem — and I’m completely honest about this with my patients — is that traditional Bengkung wrapping is simply not practical for modern life:

Between caring for a newborn, returning to work, and getting through sleepless nights, traditional wrapping can be difficult to maintain.

  • Several metres of fabric
  • Around 20 minutes to put on
  • Difficult to wrap properly by yourself
  • Starts slipping after about an hour

What I’ve Been Recommending to My Patients for the Past Few Months

That’s why, for the past few months, I’ve been recommending Mama Curve™ to my patients.

Mama Curve™ took inspiration from the traditional Bengkung principle and adapted it for modern everyday wear.

Mama Curve™ combines cross-panel compression with the convenience of everyday underwear.

  • 360° compression — front, sides, and back
  • Slips on in just 10 seconds like regular underwear
  • Invisible under virtually any outfit
  • Suitable for breastfeeding and post-C-section recovery
  • Available in sizes S to 3XL

This isn’t a belt that simply flattens your stomach from the outside while you’re wearing it.

It’s compression designed to support the abdominal wall and help it do the work it hasn’t been able to do on its own.

What My Patients Notice — Week by Week

Days 1–3
An immediate feeling of support. The stomach feels held in place, not squeezed. Most women can wear it all day without really thinking about it.
Week 1
The stomach starts to feel different to the touch — less soft, more supported. Some women are able to wear jeans they haven’t touched in months.
Weeks 2–3
This is often when other people start to notice. “What did you do? You look different.” The stomach appears more lifted, centred, and visibly smoother.
Weeks 4–8
More lasting changes around the waistline. Not weight loss — but a stomach that looks and feels more supported. Dresses come back out of the closet. Photos feel easier again.

Results vary from woman to woman. These are not medical promises — they reflect the most common feedback I hear from my patients.
